Catalogue of the filmworks of TGH Strehlow, 1935-1962
  • Description

The filmworks of TGH Strehlow is a comprehensive catalogue of the films shot by TGH Strehlow between 1935 and 1962. The catalogue contains 539 descriptions of footage on 15 reels of film, organised by time-code sequence. A limited number of copies of the catalogue will be made available to various institutions, including the Strehlow Research Centre and the Commonwealth Archives. The listing is based largely on Strehlow's annotations maintained as part of his field diaries about the films. The document lists the year in which the films were shot, a time-coded index and a brief description of the film's content. The time code follows the format given to it by Screensound when it copied the material from the original 16mm to 1-inch video. New digital video copies of the listing are now searchable. Strehlow devised a unique system of diacritics to represent Aboriginal names in his written work. The project research team chose not to include the diacritics as this listing does not require their use. All Aboriginal names have been checked for orthographic accuracy as provided by Strehlow. Where there have been difficulties with Strehlow's original documents, the research team have consulted widely to ensure consistency in the representation of Aboriginal names.
